Colitis: Intestinal infections can do this, as can inflammatory bowel disease. If your son is having intestinal cramping or other signs of illness it may be a good idea to have him evaluated. There are some things that can also color the stool red--anything from foods like beets to swallowed red yarn (yup, saw the yarn myself!) exposures to birds, reptiles and some foods can be a source for infections.
