See below: The mitral valve is a valve between the left atrium and left ventricle. When the heart squeezes to pump blood to the body, this valve prevents blood from backing up into the lungs. When this valve is malfunctioning, surgeons can either repair or replace the valve. The valve can be replaced with either a mechanical or a tissue valve. This is called mitral valve replacement or repair.
