Surgical removal: We have two lungs - the left and right lungs. Each lung is divided into lobes. When we remove a lobe of a lung, this is called a lobectomy. The removal of all of the lobes of a lung is called a pneumonectomy.

Lung removal: Lung resection surgery includes usually lobectomy and pneumonectomy. The lung is divided anatomically into 3 lobes on the right and 2 lobes on the left. Surgical removal of a lobe is called a lobectomy. Removal of the entire lung is called a pneumonectomy. These are usually done via a thoracotomy incision but can be done with small incisions or vats surgery.

Surgery: If a section of lung is involved with significant pathology, such as cancer, infection, blebs, trauma, etc, treatment can involve removal of a portion of a lobe, an entire lobe, or the entire lung.

Resection: Agree with dr. Mott, will add, lung resection surgery includes partial removal (wedge, segmentectomy, or lobectomy) or whole lung removal (pneumonectomy). Most lung removal, at modern centers, is performed minimally invasive with vats or robotic techniques. In "traditional" centers, lung surgery is more often by thorocotomy (more invasive technique).
