Prostate surgery: "prostate removal" implies a surgical intervention to remove prostate tissue. The entire removal of the prostate is a "radical prostatectomy", whereas partial prostate removal can also be accomplished. The clinical circumstances (whether cancer or benign problems) will dictate how much prostate tissue is removed. Surgery to remove prostate can either be transurethral/laparoscopic/or open surgery.

Called Prostatectomy: In general there are two types. For benign disease the enlarged glandular portion of the prostate is removed--like removing the fruit of an orange and leaving the rind. This is done when an enlarged prostate blocks the flow of urine. For prostate cancer the entire prostate with its capsule and surrounding tissue, seminal vesicle, and vas are removed. Each can be done more than one way.
