Several types: Staining can be caused by two distinct types of causation: intrinsic staining: can be caused by genetic predisposition, neonatal/perinatal antibiotic use, high temperatures for a prolonged time (usually indicated by a line of staining). There are extrinsic causes: they include foods (wine etc), tobacco use, and poor oral hygiene. There are many causes. Extrinsic stain may be removed by your gp.

Brown or other : Most common external stains are brown from smoking, heavy coffee and tea drinkers. Most common internal stains are from tetracycline antibiotics while teeth were forming. Other less common causes are stained plaque from poor oral hygiene, dental fluorosis from too much fluoride, white decalcifications, and stained dentin after enamel wearing away.

Discoloration.: There are 2 types of stain- intrinsic is when a tooth is discolored as it forms in the jawbone, extrinsic is when stain is formed on the surface of the tooth from deeply colored food and drink (spinach, red wine). Intrinsic stains can be lightened with whitening (bleaching). Extrinsic stains come off with a simple cleaning at the dentist's office.

Discolored teeth: Stains are discolored areas in the teeth. They can develop when the teeth are forming but most often they are the result of the things that we put into the mouth. Thngs like smoking, coffee, tea, red wine have pigments that attach to the teeth and can be cleaned by the hygienist. If teeth have not been cleaned for a long time the calculus that builds up can become very dark, or even black.
