Its a risk: Old data: diabetes with poor control for 20 years have 80% risk of some type of diabetic retinal disease; about 10-20 % of them includes severe changes, including bleeding from retina into vitreous, and risk of blindness. But good control can markedly decrease these risks, and if have retinopathy carefully monitored, there are treatments that can reduce risk of bleeding/ blindness.
