COPD?: A chronic cough in a smoker could be a sign of copd, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Pulmonary function testing is needed to confirm this diagnosis. Other possibilities include bronchospasm, gerd, post-nasal drip or a combination of factors. Smoking cessation is absolutely needed. Get him checked: "smoker's cough" is often an early sign of chronic bronchitis. This is the first signs of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. There may not be any early xray signs. A spirometry test would be useful (not invasive- just a breathing test).
