Lymph nodes: Lymph node service the garbage collector for any type of infection. Any infection causes them to enlarge and process the foreign invader. Normal lymph nodes in the neck can be up to 1.5 cm. Ultrasound is a good test to determine the make up of the lymph nodes but sometimes requires fine needle or open biopsy to fully determine cause of the swelling.

Common issue: The lymph nodes of the head & neck are often noticed due to their exposed location, not deep in the tissues like other nodes. When stimulated they grow from <1cm to >2cm in size & shrink back down after 2-3 wks. It is not uncommon for a child with recurrent uri, s or bug bites to have noticed nodes come & go .A size > 2cm for > 3-4 wks deserves a visit & eval.
