Spina Bifida: "neural tube defects" is a general name for developmental problems regarding the early developing spinal cord. The most commonly known defect is called "spina bifida" -- a defect in which the developing spinal cord is open to the skin on the back of the baby. This can lead to bowel or bladder control problems, neurologic problems, and even paralysis.

Unexpected surprise: Some of the saddest surprises at delivery include the open neural tube defects. The brain & spinal cord form from a fold in tissue that forms a tube & drops down & gets covered up during fetal growth. The covering is like two zippers & begins to close from the middle up & down.Failure to close leaves an open spine at the bottom or open skull at the top. Leaking proteins can lead to early detection.
