Asthma: Pulmonary function tests or peak flow analyses would be helpful to diagnose asthma. Silent reflux requires an esophageal ph probe to diagnose. Describing the symptoms is free in this forum and may be more helpful narrowed down the problem. Another option is a trial antireflux medications to see if her symptoms get better.

Spirometry: Spirometry is a non-invasive test that can be used in addition to mom's medical history to diagnose or rule out asthma. Reflux on the other hand may require endoscopic testing.
