It's a tool to use: There are a great many mnemonics that are used to recall information and help solve problems. If those five stages can help deal successfully with conflicts then their validity is good. It's much like other such memory boosters, there is not always 100% success with them. It can be a very helpful tool.

"Always"?: Anytime someone asks if something is "always true, " the answer is nearly always "no." :-) honestly, conflicts and the process of resolving them can be as original as the people experiencing them -- and also the people describing them. There can be some general themes. But maybe the most important thing is to be willing to hear each other, speak from the heart, and work towards a win-win.
