The dentist: I would have to respectfully say that the dentist has identified a problem, and the assistant should not have misspoken. Your dentist is a highly trained professional who can identify problems that you or the assistant may not easily see. I would trust what your dentist has told you, and to follow his/her recommended treatment for you.

Education: I am not sure why you would trust the opinion if an assistant when a licensed professional dental hygienist. Who may i add examined you and made a diagnosis of your disease state as well as recommend treatment. The dental assistant did not do any of these things. If you really want to be sure you do not have gum disease at all get a second opinion. It it contradicts get a third opinion. 2>1.

The dentist: The dentist should be experienced and qualified enough to diagnose a periodontal disease, not the assistant. But if you doubts , you seek another opinion by going to another dentist.
