Influenza: There are many varieties or strains of influenza some of which can occur in humans, but many occur only in swine or avian populations. Inevitably there is crossover among species so occasionally a human can acquire a virus previously only seen in an animal. Avian flu is a strain of flu usually only seen in birds and not humans, but has acquired the ability to infect humans.
