No simple way: Serotype/genetic testing is the only way to determine this and it can only be done in a laboratory. Symptoms alone are not sufficient however avian flu is extremely uncommon at this time.

Agree with Dr. : Presente. One tip off with avian flu can be history of travel to areas where avian flu is occuring (especially if you go to open air markets or fowl farms). Testing makes ultimate determination.
