See answer details.: Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is produced by the pituitary gland and stimulates the thyroid gland (in your neck) to produce the thyroid hormone thyroxine (t4) which is then converted into triodothyronine (t3) which is the active hormone that stimulates metabolism. A third generation TSH test is one that has increased sensitivity and can measure lower levels of TSH than previous assays.
