Circadian rhythm: Cortisol is one of many hormones that vary through the day as part of your circadian rhythm. The pituitary sends out acth several hours before you wake up and this elevates adrenal cortisol; your am cortisol is generally higher than your evening cortisol. This rhythm can be disrupted by many things; depression, stress, chronic illness, sleep disorders, cushings syndrome.
