The white outer coat: Sclera is the medical name for the white, non-transparent outer coat of the eyeball. It is about 1 mm thick, quite tough, and made of collagen (protein). The eye muscles attach to it to allow movement of the eyeball, and the nerves and blood vessels penetrate it to allow transmission of blood and nerve impulses. There is a rather rare inflammatory disease of the sclera called scleritis.
