Magic Milk: Milk is high in lactose (sugar) and the addition of table sugar (sucrose) can also be helpful. Both sugars raise Insulin levels which in turn effects Amino Acid levels in the bloodstream. With insulin, tryptophan levels remain higher vs other Amino Acids so more gets to the brain. It's a precursor to serontonin, the "feel good" amino acid. Sleep isn't a guarantee but relaxation can be induced.

Calming: if drinking mild calms you and helps you sleep then use it. sleep medications work well for a period of time but most people become tolerant to them and then its very difficult to seek without them. i would strongly encourage good sleep hygiene before using medication: http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/docs/Info-sleep%20hygiene.pdf
