Check up: This is called tenesmus, the false urge to have a bowel movement. The rectum responds to pressure and sends a signal that you need to defecate. Anything that causes pressure in the rectum will cause this signal. These include stool, enlarged hemorrhoids, polyps or tumors, inflammation of the rectal lining (proctitis). The safest thing to do is discuss this with your doctor.

High-fiber diet: If this is a change in your bowel pattern, you should see your doctor. If it is not, increasing the amount of fiber in your diet, and perhaps taking fiber supplements, would be a good place to start. If you do, be sure to increase your fluid intake also. If this does not work, see your doctor or a gastroenterologist. Good luck.
