How dangerous is a low platelet count?

Can be serious: It all depends on your other medical conditions and how low the platelet count is. A rough normal range (depending on your lab) is 150-350 for adults. If just under 100, it may not be of serious concern except to watch. If under 50, it gets more concerning and once it reaches below 20 and especially under 10, spontaneous brain bleeds are possible. Also rapid rate of decline is very concerning.

See below: Agree with Dr. B. It depends on the associated conditions. An otherwise healthy person would be okay with a count as low as 10,000, but not if the person has sepsis.

How low?: Platelets in normal range help stop bleeding when we are injured. Low platelet count below 100000 increases our risk of bleeding ; it becomes dangerous below 30000 and requires immediate attention (transfusion) below 10000

YES: Many people do and live quite normally. Just make sure you have periodic surveillance and report any abnormal bleeding / bruising without delay. Critically low platelet count can result in severe and potentially life threatening bleeding complication.

Low: Counts between 100-150 (thousand) are usually w/o symptoms. As the count drops towards 50 more bruising and mucosal bleeding are seen. As the number drops below 50 towards 20 the incidence of spontaneous bleeding in the brain increases. Hope that this helps.
