Small Intestines: Many menstruating women suffer with iron deficiency anemia. This may occur due to heavier periods, poor iron intake, or both. Pregnant women need extra iron to produce a large amount of blood preparing for delivery. Iron is best absorbed on an empty stomach, and also with vitamin c supplement; acid improves absorption. Sometimes iron is difficult to tolerate, upset stomach or constipation.
