Why are computer games so addictive?

8 doctors weighed in across 4 answers

Because they are fun: No one ever got addicted to something they hated. Make your life and your relationships your priority. Play your games when you have time after those things are attended to. On your deathbed you will remember your friends and family; not the hours you spent on world of warcraft. Make some good memories everyday you may need those in your old age to get you by.

Good advice: The other answers are very good. Games are totally immersive now and engage almost all of our senses. Children with add seem to be vulnerable to repetitive games in some newer studies. Wait till games involve all of our senses and some people will never unplug. Get off the computer and live real life is good advice to us all.

Brain chemistry. : Modern games are sophisticated, appealing to the psychological needs and wants of gamers. The combination audiovisual stimulation, intermittent rewards (levels, experience, collectables, power-ups, and achievements), with solitary and social gameplay experiences makes videogame addiction as powerful as other addictions in altering brain chemistry. Seek help if it interferes with your life.
