Uterus removal: The hyster is the uterus. Ectomy means to cut out. So hysterectomy is the cutting out of the uterus. The ovaries are the oophors, so removal of the ovaries is an oophorectomy. Technically a full hysterectomy would be the removal of the entire uterus, however many people believe that full hysterectomy implies removal of the uterus and the ovaries.
