Specializes in Child Psychiatry

Impairment: A psychological/behavioral symptom that causes impairment in a person's function or distress for that person. For example: anxiety is normal & keeps us alert to possible danger. If anxiety is excessive or out of proportion to the situation, and causes us distress or impaiment in our ability to handle situations, then we have an anxiety disorder. It is then considered to be a psychiatric problem.
