Short Term Care: Urgent care is delivered in an ambulatory setting. Patients arrive without appointments, first come, first served (except in cases of emergency) care that is rendered is often to treat minor traumatic injuries (ankle sprain, broken finger), lacerations, minor illnesses - sore throat, cough, uti. Not a primary care setting - patients are referred back to their own pmd.

Simplest: The simpliest definition is "treat and release". Many "urgicare" centers are outside hospitals. The primary advantage comes in shorter waiting time for "mior" injuries or complaints versus long waits in busy hospital E.R.S. They do serve a vital function and should be used when needed.
