Pain Relief: Analgesia literally means "painlessness". Analgesics are medications that reduce pain. Moderate to severe pain is usually treated with narcotic medications, such as morphine, oxycodone, hydromorphone, or fentanyl. Mild to moderate pain may be treated by over the counter (otc) medications such as Ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Some otc medications are available in prescription-strength formulations.
