You could get : An infection. The infection could spread to the bone over time and you can lose your toe. That would be an extreme case as once you see pus oozing and pain increase you will likely seek help.
Dr. Joseph Newman
Podiatry 32 years experience
Infection: If it become infected and spreads to the underlying bone, it can become a problem that can require hospitalization, IV antibiotics, extensive surgery including amputation. If you have circulation issues or diabetes, your risk of this increases. Treating ingrown nails before infection is often easier than once it has set in.
Dr. Payam Rafat
Podiatry 22 years experience
Get it treated.: Get it treated. Leaving an ingrown nail untreated could lead to the development of an abscess and possible underlying bone infection. Get it taken care of by a professional to avoid preventable complications.
