Varies with patient: In most cases croup is a mild to moderate illness that passes after a few days of scarry moments. A problem of the flexable airway of the mostly 6m-6yo kids, the prime treatment focuses on keeping kid & parents calm during dramatic night coughing fits. Kids that quit drinking, quit eating and bark day & night, may require hospital care. Always stay in contact with your doc during an episode.

Can be serious: Croup is almost always a viral illness. It can be serious in smaller children, and those may need to be hospitalized for a few days. Most children with croup do not get hospitalized. It is a passing childhood illness.

Learn to ignore the sound, but judge the severity by the discomfort of the child.Mild discomfort may respond to steaming the bathroom or a walk outside, more severe breathing trouble needs seen asap in the local er.The root infection is a cold virus.
