Are there any long consequences to ivh if it is caught early?

Yes: An ivh represents bleeding that has already occurred, so at the time of detection there may already be associated brain injury. In preterm infants, milder forms of ivh are common, although more serious bleeding can occur. In older patients, ivh is usually associated with underlying injury or coagulopathy.

Yes: Neurodevelopmental problems like cerebral palsy (mild, moderate or severe), delay in cognitive, speech, fine motor and gross motor areas, mental challenge etc, can result with 35 to 66 % of infants that had grade III ivh and 90% of grade IV ivh. 10% of infants with birth weight of less than 3 lbs can have problems with co-ordination, muscle stiffness etc because of bleeding into the cerebellum.
