Osteopathic doctors have a D.O. Medical degree but have the same qualifications to practice medicine as md's do. Osteopathic training includes traditional medical training in addition to training in manual manipulative therapy.

Medical doctors have an md degree. Doctors of osteopathy have do degrees, and have the same privileges and complete medical school training (often with the same textbooks) as mds, but dos practice a more holistic type of medicine and perform more hands-on therapies like spinal adjustment. Chiropractors (dc degree) cannot prescribe medications nor perform surgery. Od is doctor of optometry degree.

Osteopathic physicians have a do, the doctor of osteopathic medicine, degree. While dos and mds are legal equivalents in the United States the degrees are not interchangeable, thus a do cannot use md at the end of his name. This has been a traditional sticking point with some dos, which i think is pretty silly, but some have gone so far as to buy paper mds from diploma mills to pass on as real.
