What are the similarities between the heart valve and the epiglottis?

Valve: Well... A heart valve is like a check valve, directing blood in one direction and preventing back flow. The epiglottis prevents food from entering the main bronchus (air pipe) when you swallow and as such can be seen as performing a valve-like function.
