Two basic types: While there are many, many prosthetic or artificial replacement heart valves there are two basic types: mechanical and biological. Of the latter there are porcine valves and those made from bovine pericardium. Additionally, preserved human aortic valves, also referred to as homografts, are used.

See below: The structure of the current st jude valve, the most commonly used valve, is made of graphite with a prolytic carbon coating. There is a sewing cuff which is a ring around the valve shich is made of synthetic fiber like polyester, or teflon, or dacron.
