The right atrium: The primary pacemaker for the heart in known as the sinus node. It is located in the upper part of the right atrium where the superior vena cava enters. If the sinus node fails to initiate the heart beat, a number of other areas in the atrium, atrioventricular node, and even the ventricles, are capable of assuming pacemaker activity, although usually at a slower rate than would be normal.
