Open heart surgery: More correctly "open chest surgery". Many procedures can now be done without opening the chest. Common reasons/benefits: bypass for blockage of the heart arteries, valve replacement for either narrowing (stenosis) or leakage (insufficiency), correction of congenital abnormalities, closure of abnormal openings between heart chambers etc..

Anyone with a heart: Heart surgery of any type is designed to relieve symptoms, prolong life. No surgeon is going to operate on a patient who doesn't need it.
