Not just the leaflet: The mitral valve has two leaflets that open and shut. However, there is an important supporting structure. The leaflets attach to thin chordae tendinae, dental floss-like chords that connect leaflets to papillary muscles. The pap muscles are bands of muscle tissue arising from the wall of the heart, whose contraction and relaxation transmit force to the leaflets.
