Very complex: Not completely understood but the there are high pressure sensor baroreceptors in the carotid arteries in the neck and the aorta that send signals to the brain to alter the speed and force of heart contractions as well adjust vessel tone throughout the body. These sensory nerves are excited by stretch of the blood vessel. Low pressure braoreceptors in the veins they alter body volume via hormones.
