On the heart: The coronary arteries come from the main artery leaving the heart (the aorta). There are usually two main coronary arteries, the right and the left. They arise just above the aortic valve and then branch multiple times to supply oxygen to the heart muscle.

Root of the aorta: They arise in the root of the aorta just above the aortic valve and proceed on the external surface of the heart in the interventricular groove and interatrial groove sending branches down into the heart muscle.
