Salt restriction: Salt restriction is more important than fluid restriction in most patients. Fluid restriction might be appropriate in a patient with low sodium. Salt restriction is important in all patients with congestive heart failure. A typical recommendation would be 2000 milligrams of sodium daily.

Avoid: Salt or sodium containing foods and exceesive liquids. Salty foods does not necessarily mean you adding salt. A suasage or hot dog has sodium as do many carobonated drinks, etc.
