Yes.: Yes. Excessive alcohol can lead to weight gain, and hypertension (high blood pressure). Patients with coarctation already have a tendency for high blood pressure in the upper part of the body. Drinking may lead to irregular heart beat, such as atrial fibrillation which will be poorly tolerated in patients with congenital defects such as coarctation or valvular disease.

No: Coarctation of the aorta is a congenital abnormality, and as far as i know, is not associated with drinking in the mother, although other kinds of congenital heart problems may be. If you mean, can you drink if you have coarctation, the answer is a qualified yes. High doses of alcohol are not good for either the heart or the circulatory system. Less than 2 drinks/d for men, 1 drink/d for women.

Shouldn't: Always drink in moderation. But drinking alcohol should not directly affect a typical coarctation. Please discuss your specific issues with your cardiologist to be sure.
