This : This is a very difficult situation. The transplant operation itself is costly, but a patient must also be able to obtain their medications and medical care after transplant as well (for the lifetime of the patient). Medicaid may cover liver transplantation, but varies by state. If your friend qualifies, he may wish to look into this option as a source of medical coverage.

Will need insurance: These problems - preexisting condition, coverage for medications, etc, are exactly the problems we hope will be addressed with the healthcare reform act that is slowly being put in place. Everyone will have to find insurance in some way - including your friend. There are no magic answers other, but the future does look brighter. Try working with a social worker too.
