Several: A routine cardiac catheterization involves several parts. The patient is prepped and brought to a procedure room. Usually the area around the femoral artery is numbed locally and an arterial sheath inserted. Through this tube, about 3mm in size, other smaller tubes called catheters are advanced up the aorta to the heart. Pressures are measured and pics taken of coronary arteries and left ventricle.
