Probably : Probably the most serious cause of abrupt weakness and numbness on one side of the body is stroke (an older term is "cerebrovascular accident"). Symptoms that begin suddenly and level off are more suggestive of an ischemic stroke (the type of stroke when a part of your brain doesn't get enough blood). Symptoms that begin suddenly. And get worse over hours suggest a hemorrhagic stroke (the type of stroke when a blood vessel bursts inside your brain). People who develop these symptoms need to get to the closest hospital right away!
