The : The first elements in diagnosis are a history and physical examination. Severe arthritis typically presents with pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of function of the affected joint. An xray is taken to evaluate the level of arthritis. No other testing is needed. A knee replacement is done for pain relief, and should be done only after a full discussion of the risks and benefits of surgery. In general, it's worth trying medication, exercise, and activity modification first. Also, a short course of physical therapy is often very helpful in restoring function.

Several : Several tests may rule out problems that may need to be corrected prior to surgery. Not everyone need all of them and some people need more testing. Complete blood count, metabolic profile, coagulation parameters (ptt, pt, inr). Electrocardiogram (ekg) looks for problems with your heart. Urinalysis and urine culture looks for infection in your urinary tract. Chest x-ray looks for problems with your lungs.
