Unfortunately : Unfortunately there is no cure for herpes and none on the horizon as far as I am aware. If you have not had an outbreak then it is possible you may never have one. However, if you do there are treatments (acyclovir, valtrex). Also, for people with recurrent outbreaks there is supression therapy with these medications, which is typically one or two pills a day. Agree with Dr. J: Herpes virus persists in body. Oral herpes, cold sores are generally harmless. Genital herpes eruptions may be painful and require prescription drugs.
