Preparing for Labor: The membranes are loosely adherent to the lining of the uterus. During the exam, if the cervix is open enough to allow passage of the examiners finger, the finger can be swept between the membranes and the lower uterine wall breaking this loose adhesion. This releases compounds that can further soften and thin the cervix and cause an earlier onset of labor.

Membrane stripping: Membrane stripping involves the OB MD digitally during the pelvic exam removing the edges of the fetal membranes from the inner surface of the uterus. It is anecdotally thought that labor will them ensue more 'quickly". Most often the bag of waters can sometimes leak undetected possible increasing the risk of fetal infection.
