A member asked:

Should adults be getting fluoride treatments? i'm 19, and used to get fluoride treatments at the dentist as a kid, which i actually kind of enjoyed. i haven't had one of those in years now, and am just curious as to why they stop at a certain point.

Fluoride : Fluoride treatments are most effective in the earlier years. More common now is Fluoride varnish, it stays on the teeth longer and is easier to tolerate. If you are cavity prone at your age, you would still benefit form a topical Fluoride application. Unfortunately, most insurance companies have made the decision not to cover it over a specific age usually around 14-18 Y.O.

You : You can still have Fluoride treatment as an adult, however the most important step in oral hygiene is brushing. Go see your dentist regularly. If you are cavity prone, Fluoride treatments are for you. Otherwise, there really is no need.

Most : Most offices stop because insurance rarely pays for it. While they should offer it to you and let you decide, most dentists suffer from approval addiction and don't want to have to explain and ask for money. Many patients believe that if insurance won't pay, then it must not be necessary. Many dentists don't want to discuss this.
