Is it safe to take suboxone while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Yes: In pregnancy, Suboxone is considered low-risk. There is limited studies done, so there may be other medications that will work just as well. It is not recommended in breast feeding because the medication can get into breast milk and affect the baby.

Yes: Suboxone (subutex) and Methadone are used to treat opiate addiction. Yes, these medications may be used while pregnant. However, after delivery the baby may require an extended stay in the hospital to observe for and/or treat withdrawal. Breast feeding is not advised as per the product literature; this should be discussed with your baby's pediatrician.

What's alternative?: If your opiate addiction is so severe that without Suboxone you are likely to relapse, being on this medication is safer than not. Obviously it has some risks that are worse than sugar pill, but that's not what we must compare it to - we must compare to to heroin and/or other opiates you were using before starting suboxone.
