Infectious : Infectious mononucleosis (mono) is caused by a virus. The Omnicef (cefdinir) will not help a virus. Sometimes antibiotics are given just in case something else is going on (mono and strep throat act similarly). The best treatment for mono is symptom relief and waiting for it to go away--that can mean weeks to months of persistent fatigue. Occasionally an oral steroid is given to make the tonsils go down. This can be controvertial, as many doctors do not like to give steroids in the middle of an infection.
