Some people use basal body temperature charts, ovulation predictor kits, etc. Honestly, it is one of the least effective birth control options and unplanned pregnancies occur frequently.

When you formally learn a method of NFP you observe a physical sign that correlates with ovulation. In Creighton Model System, for example, you learn to observe the mucus sign. You learn to chart your observation in a standardized fashion. You can then use the fertile days to have genitalia contact if your sim is to get pregnant. Or you avoid contact on those days if you want to prevent pregnancy
