Trauma : Trauma such as you describe can cause irritation of the sites where the cartilage of your rib cage joins the breastbone (sternum). This is called costochondritis, because it causes inflammation of the cartilage (chondr) associated with the ribs (costo). Probably the best treatment will be with anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen. If there is an exquisitely tender lump associated with the pain then the junction may be dislocated. In this case it would be best to be seen by a physician.
